Hello,

My name is Matt and I'm totally new to the world of encryption. I'm
coming off a recent internet security scare and want to be more mindful
and intentional about protecting my online profile.

Any suggestions for how I can get the great google out of my life
without losing everything I've accumulated in gmail over the last 10 years?

Matt

Hi, Matt.

This group is a help clinic for using OpenPGP so it's not too
surprising you have received no answer to your questions. That aside,
I think the best way to protect your online profile is not to publish
it. Encryption can only help you maintain confidentiality of material
and is useful only if your intended recipients can decrypt.

Maybe I'm living in a cave, but as far as I know Google's algorithms
skim your mail as you open it to enable targeted advertising in the
webmail interface. My first thought at avoidance of this is to not
open mail in a web browser. Fetch your mail via POP3 or IMAP and the
problem doesn't exist. To get a new start without losing your Gmail
archive simply synchronize your Gmail account to your local mail client.

Whether I'm correct about Google's treatment of your mail is hardly an
issue in the big picture since they are not the only ones tracking and
profiling you.

In this group we can help you learn to use OpenPGP so you can better
protect the privacy of your exchanges with others who use OpenPGP.
